Are Carbohydrates Bad For You?

One of the biggest nutrition myths still floating around is that carbohydrates are the enemy. People hear the word “carbs” and immediately think they need to cut them out to lose weight or get healthy. But let me tell you something, and I want this to be crystal clear. Carbohydrates are not bad for you. In fact, they are one of the most essential parts of a balanced diet when you eat the right kinds.
Melinda and I have been in the health and wellness world for years, and we've seen it all. The low carb crazes. The keto trends. The carb phobia that spreads like wildfire across the internet. But if you’ve ever asked yourself, “Are carbohydrates bad for you?” I want to give you a straight answer. No. What matters is the type of carbohydrates you're eating, not the fact that you're eating them.
What Do Carbohydrates Actually Do?
Carbohydrates are the body’s primary fuel source. When you eat carbs, your body breaks them down into glucose, which is used for energy. Your brain, your muscles, your organs, they all depend on glucose to function properly.
If you’ve ever tried cutting out carbs entirely, you probably felt tired, irritable, or even foggy headed. That’s because your body was literally running on empty.
Here’s what carbs help with:
Energy production during workouts, daily tasks, and brain function
Muscle recovery when paired with protein after exercise
Hormone regulation and mood support
Fiber intake, which supports digestion and gut health
Carbs are not optional. They’re necessary. But again, not all carbs are created equal.
Healthy Carbohydrates You Should Be Eating
Let’s talk about the carbs that actually support your health. These are carbs that are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and do not spike your blood sugar like refined carbs do.
Here are some of the best options:
Sweet potatoes – Loaded with fiber and antioxidants and a great slow digesting carb
Quinoa – A complete protein and a healthy grain alternative that is gluten free
Brown rice – A solid source of complex carbs and B vitamins
Oats – Help lower cholesterol and are amazing for gut health
Beans and lentils – Full of fiber and plant based protein
Fruit – Yes, fruit has sugar, but it is natural and packed with antioxidants and fiber
Vegetables – Especially starchy ones like carrots, beets, and squash
These kinds of carbs digest slowly, keep you full longer, and fuel your body the way it was designed to be fueled.
Carbs You Should Limit or Avoid
This is where most people go wrong. They cut out all carbs instead of just cutting the processed and refined ones that are actually doing the damage.
If you want to feel better, have more energy, and stay lean, then limit these:
White bread and pasta – Stripped of nutrients and spike your blood sugar fast
Pastries and baked goods – Full of refined sugar and unhealthy fats
Sugary cereals – These are marketed as healthy but are basically candy in disguise
Chips and crackers – Highly processed and low in nutrients
Soda and fruit juices – Liquid sugar that adds calories with zero value
These carbs offer nothing but short term satisfaction. They lead to energy crashes, blood sugar swings, cravings, and long term weight gain when consumed consistently.
But What About Weight Loss?
Let’s address the elephant in the room. A lot of people cut carbs because they think it is the fastest way to lose weight. And sure, you might drop a few pounds at first, but it is mostly water weight. Carbs hold water, so when you cut them, the scale moves, but that does not mean you’ve lost fat.
The real key to fat loss is being in a calorie deficit and eating nutrient dense foods, not avoiding carbs entirely. When you include healthy carbs, you’ll have more energy to train hard, more fiber to feel full, and better long term sustainability.
Melinda and I do not eliminate carbs. We eat smart. We stay away from the processed garbage and stick to real, whole food carbs that support our goals. That is what we teach our kids, and that is what we teach in our Pure Path community.
Bottom Line: Carbs Are Not the Problem
If you’re still wondering, “Are carbohydrates bad for you?” let this be your wake up call. Carbs are not the problem. The problem is all the processed junk that is being labeled as food. Your body was made to thrive on real, whole carbohydrates, not synthetic sugar loaded imposters.
Stop fearing carbs. Start being smart about your choices.
Fuel your body right and you’ll feel the difference.
